Each Brain Cell contains a microchip memory which requires no battery and can store relatively large amounts of data. Where an operator wishes to conduct a test on that particular appliance the read probe is applied to the Brain Cell and the Portable Appliance Tester will automatically read the asset description (serial number, location etc.)
