Knowledge Base Question

Q. How do I download my PAT2000i(ee) / IT1000 tester into my PATGuard program ?

A.

Downloading a PAT tester successfully is dependent upon a) the software having the correct settings, b) the correct download lead and c) the correct procedure.

 a)               SOFTWARE Only Test Instruments that are registered with the program can be downloaded.  The PATGuard software has the correct coms settings embedded for each PAT Tester that can download to this program.  Please note that only PAT Testers available in the Test Instrument drop down list can download to PATGuard.

b)               DOWNLOAD LEAD

THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO DOWNLOAD IS THE CABLE.

Our testers ONLY download to an RS232 serial port (COM port).

There are two download leads available:

                                                                              9-9 way (Part No. 194A919)

                                                                              9-25 way (Part No. 194A920)

The data in/output port on the PAT tester is 9 pin. Serial ports on PCs are either 9 pin or 25 pin. If you have the wrong type of lead then a 9 to 25 way adapter can be used.

If you are unsure if your download lead is correct or you wish to adapt or make your own cable then refer to the wiring configurations below:

9-9 way                 9 Pin Male (Tester)      9 Pin Female (PC)

                                                      5_______________________5

                                                      3_______________________2

                                                      2_______________________3

                                                                                                      4,6,8 Linked together

9-25 Way                9 Pin Male (Tester)                 25 Pin Female (PC)

                                                      5_______________________7

                                                      3_______________________3

                                                      2_______________________2

                                                                                                      5,6,20 Linked together

c)               DOWNLOAD PROCEDURE

AT THE TESTER

If the tester is an IEE tester i.e. a PAT2000i with the IEE Eprom (the Operating Instructions would refer to the IEE Code of Practice and the serial number of the tester would start with a K or L or higher) check that the baud rate is set correctly for computer output i.e. 9600 by pressing the S key on the keyboard at the start of the microprogram sequence "Press # for new test" (see page 21 of Operating Instructions for further details).

With the Tester switched on and the download cable connected from the Tester to the computer serial port selected on the Comms Properties (see a) above) screen of the software and the Tester at the beginning of the test sequence i.e. Press # for new test.

Press the SEND DATA key.

AT THE PC

Select the PAT Download icon.

The Download dialog box will be displayed.

The Com port should be set to the physical connection you are using (usually COM1 or COM2).

Select the PAT Tester to be downloaded.  The Com’s settings will be automatically defaulted to those set up for the individual tester.

Select to download to a Database or a File.

Select the Site to be downloaded if downloading to a single Site or “Auto” for all Sites (Usually set to Auto).

Enter the person who’s tests are to be downloaded or leave blank if the person is to be picked up from the test results.

Click on the “OK” button to activate the software to accept the download.

The “Please start the transmission now” message is displayed.

At this point go IMMEDIATELY to the tester and press YES

The Download should now commence.

If you still experience difficulty downloading. Then try downloading to another serial port on the PC if possible (alter the port number in the Download dialog box).

The most likely cause of not being able to download is the cable, please check that it is correct  see b) Download Lead above.

If PATGuard has any problems processing the data it will create a Site called “Unassigned” appended with the date and time.  All of the tests which can’t be processed will be located in this Site.
