Knowledge Base Question

Q. Error message: 'Your license does not allow for any more instances of PATGuard to run.'

A.

PATGuard is a network program capable of supporting multiple licences. A lock file is used to keep a count of the current number of users logged into the program.  This is checked against the licence and prevents the number of current users exceeding the user licence.

This message is expected if the number of workstations logged into PATGuard is equal to the number of licences available.  Hoever, if the PC is switched off or fails in any way and PATGuard is not properly shut down, the lock file may remain with an incorrect count of users.  The result will be that when the program is re-started and the user logs in, the recorded number of users may exceed the licence. A PATGuard dialog box will be displayed together with the message “Your license does not allow for any more instances of PATGuard to run” and the user will not be able to log into PATGuard.

In the case of multi-user installations the available licences may be used up if any of the PCs freeze, are rebooted or switched off without properly closing down PATGuard.

Solution

To resolve this problem locate the Patguard*.loc file and delete it.

NOTE: In the case of multi-user installations please ensure there are no other instances of PATGuard open before deleting the Loc file as any open programs will be shut down automatically.

If the program is installed on a standalone PC and the default path was accepted, then the file can be located in c:\Program Files\Seaward\PATGuard*.

* = Program name e.g. the loc file for PATGuard Elite will be PatguardElite.loc and the default path will be c:\Program Files\Seaward\PATGuard Elite

For a network installation, the user will have defined the path to where the program resides. Make sure no one is using PATGuard anywhere on the network before deleting the Patguard*. Loc file.

The Patguard.loc file is a hidden file. If you are unable to find it in the PATGuard directory you may have to alter the ‘view’ options in Windows Explorer or any other file control application.

For Windows Explorer

1.                  From the ‘View’ drop down select ‘Folder Options’

2.                  The Folder Options dialogue box is displayed.

3.                  Select the ‘View’ tab and select ‘Show all files’ in the ‘Hidden files’ folder.

4.                  Select OK to enable these view options.

Now you should be able see the file. Select the Patguard*.loc file and delete it. You can now restart the program and log in successfully.
