I'm about to start testing musical equipment in a studio; should I use low amp earth bond test and/or low voltage insulation test (nearly all items are class 1)? Items include guitar amps and rack mounted effect units, any help would be good, I don't want to break anything!

I'd say so, yes.
Most audio signal processing gear, such as your fx units, should definitely be treated in the same way as IT equipment.
