when testing a standard 230v /110volt yellow transformer should it be tested as :
A 230volt hand held class 1 or 2 using the output port on the 230v side.
as a 110 volt hand held class1 or 2 using the output port of the 110v on the left hand side.

Well, IMO, the transformer is a 230V appliance, so should be tested as such.
It doesn't 'run off' a 110V supply, so isn't a 110V appliance.

It would be Class I, as it is carrying through the earth from the supply side to the outlet side, in the same manner as an extension lead.

As Grizzly says - 230V Class 1 test with earth probe to 110V outlet earth (and be sure it is the earth and that you've removed probe before the load test). I've noticed that these use over 100W even if nothing is plugged into them so always suggest to the user that they turn off at mains when not in use.
