I personally think the admins on here do an amazing job. There is rarely a spam post which is on here for 1 WORKING day before being deleted (normally with the user as well).

Thanks Alan,

I try keep on top of the spam and delete it as soon as possible, flagging it really makes my job easier too.

Many thanks,
Gary

The Seaward forum does seem to cop more than its fair share of junk and spam, compared with other forums on broadly similar subjects.

Unfortunately spam bots target good ranking websites and post links on them so they can raise the ranking of other sites. I've improved the registration captcha and disabled URLs but it doesn't stop the bots and people posting.

I'm investigating alternative methods and community systems to help reduce the spam. If you guys have any suggestions then feel free to post them, after all you are our community :)

Its not really out of control, I delete them throughout the day.

As previously mentioned I'm in the process of looking at alternatives.

Thanks,
Gary

Sorry Gary, but it does appear that it is out of control.

You really need to find a solution to this issue, as I'm sure it's not doing Seaward's online reputation any good.
This is the only forum I frequent that has this much spam, regularly and consistently.
The question is: what is it that makes this forum such a soft target, whilst many other forums have (apparently) hardly any problems at all?

Hi Grizzly,

I completely feel your frustration, I was ill yesterday and it unable to delete the spam as it came in.

We are currently testing a new community system to replace this forum. While PHPBB can be used for commercial use its not ideal. Other businesses use systems such as vBulletin which handle spam a lot better than PHPBB which is a free forum. Every time I update the forum the bots seem to find a way around the captcha process.

For now I will suspend forum registrations and add a little notice to the top. Minimize it and it won't appear again.
