The IET Code of Practice recommends that in addition to a visual inspection & any relevant tests, the operation of the RCD should be checked using an RCD tester which will confirm that the RCD trips within the specified limits based on the RCD type. Pressing the RCD test button will also confirm functionality. Many modern PAT testers have the RCD testing facility built in.
