Seaward Environmental Policy

Rod Taylor describes the steps Seaward Electronic is taking to reduce its carbon footprint and why he believes this will be good for business.  Very quickly, climate change has moved from being a distant concern to representing a real and immediate issue for businesses and organisations of all shapes and sizes. It has been estimated that 5 tonnes of CO2 are produced by every full time employee per year. In the challenge to become carbon neutral, no business can therefore afford to ignore the impact of its activities on the local, regional and global environment.  Against this background, I firmly believe that not only is environmental concern essential for all responsible businesses, but that we are rapidly moving towards a situation where environmental performance will increasingly become a determining factor behind whether contracts and orders are won or lost. The reality of this situation has become particularly apparent after Seaward recently undertook a comprehensive audit of its energy consumption as part of plans to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by 20% each year for the next three years. When assessing our impact on the environment no part of the business was overlooked. The whole programme was set up through an inter-departmental environmental management group so that all staff were involved in the process of analysis, discussion and decisions.

In particular The Seaward Group will:

1.       Product Responsibility

Consider the environmental impacts of its products at all stages of their life cycle.

2.       Consumption of Resources

Seek to address its impact on the environment through the adoption of a sustainable procurement policy. We will conserve resources through efficient use and careful planning.

3.      Energy

Use environmentally safe and sustainable energy sources to meet its needs. We will invest in improved energy efficiency in the manufacture, design and subsequent use of our products.

4.       Waste Management

Recycle materials wherever possible, minimise waste (especially hazardous waste) and dispose of all waste through safe and responsible methods.

5.      Purchasing and the Supply Chain

Work with our suppliers to ensure that they recognise and reduce the environmental impact of their products and transportation.

6.      Transportation

Through coordinated route planning and delivery schedules, seek to realise the dual benefits of reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions and; through coordinated planning and introduction of new schemes the Group will seek to reduce emissions produced in travelling to work and to remote meetings.

7.       Audit

Conduct an annual audit of our performance in implementing these principles, meeting our targets and in complying with all applicable laws and regulations.
